Thomas L. Shafer, of Jacksonville, entered heaven May 18, 2019, at the age of 93. A funeral service will be held at Autry Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon with Reverend Mike Miller officiating. Mr. Shafer will be laid to rest at Still Waters Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville.

Mr. Shafer was born in Gatesville, Texas, June 19, 1925, to Thomas and Birdie Shafer. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Opal, Ruby, Jean, Dora, Luna Mae, Blanche, and Millie. He moved to Jacksonville in 1976, and managed Murphy Brothers Furniture Store.

He was a veteran of World War II and fought in Europe with the US Army. He was wounded and left for dead but managed to crawl to an aid station for help and then spent several months in a hospital in England recovering from his wounds.

Mr. Shafer was married to Virginia Deaver on September 29,1943. She preceded him in death July 15, 2012. On May 4, 2013, he married Billie Gillespie.

Thomas loved God, his church, and his family. He spent many hours with his grandchildren teaching them how to drive, to ride a horse, and to enjoy the outdoors. He was a gardener who could make anything grow.

Mr. Shafer is survived by his wife, Billie Gillespie Shafer; daughters, Carolyn Shafer Hutchins (Jimmy) of Tyler, Brenda Shafer Fleming (Jerry) of Fort Worth, and Judy Shafer Phillips of Plano. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Tammy Hutchins Riley (Chris), Tara Hutchins Jones (Chris), Brian Hutchins, Amy Fleming Cooper (Daniel), Amanda Fleming Kolman (Loren), Melodie Fleming McGarrah (Jeremy), Angela Phillips Ferguson (Joe), Brett Phillips (Jessica), and Brandon Phillips (Kaitlin); and 22 great grandchildren.

A visitation will begin on Friday, May 24, 2019 and friends are cordially invited to visit with Mr. Shafer's family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
