John "Raymond" Brinkley, loyal husband, loving father and devoted friend, died Sunday September 2, 2018 surrounded by family in his final days.

Raymond was born August 10, 1932, to John Robert and Maxine Brinkley in Wewoka, Oklahoma, where he grew up. He enlisted in the Army at age 17 and proudly served in the 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. Raymond went on to graduate from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma.

In 1974, while in Dallas, he met Carol McKeethan, while living at the same apartment complex. The two hit it off instantly and married on February 15, 1975 in Bullard, Texas. Initially settling in Dallas, the couple had three children, Ryan, Shannon and Allison, who died soon after birth. In 1979, the couple moved with their children to Spring Texas, just outside Houston, where they would raise their family.

Soon after retirement, the couple settled back in East Texas near Carol's family. Despite pride in his Oklahoma roots, Raymond quickly made close friends. The highlight of his week was volunteering at Love's Lookout Visitors Center in Jacksonville, Texas, which he did for many years. He never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to people from near and far as they made their way through the area. He also loved the friends he made in his local coffee club.

Raymond regularly made his way back to Oklahoma to see friends and family. He would attend Army reunions as well as reunions for Wewoka High School. He enjoyed coming home and sharing pictures and stories with family and friends.

The couple had two grandchildren, Jack David Strickler and Claire Brinkley Strickler. Raymond's life revolved around his children and grandchildren. He loved spending time with them, always welcoming the chance to have family around him, and he would be quick to show you pictures of them at the first opportunity.

Raymond was an avid reader and enjoyed college sports, especially those involving his teams from Oklahoma. He attended Broadway Church of Christ in Tyler, Texas.

Devoted to his family, he was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by Carol Brinkley, his beloved wife of 43 years; his son Ryan Brinkley, his daughter Shannon Brinkley Strickler and her husband Todd and his grandchildren Jack and Claire Strickler.

Memorial services for John "Raymond" Brinkley will be held Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Boren-Conner funeral home in Bullard, Texas with Jim Laws officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.
