Funeral services for Bettye Jean Dunnington of Athens are scheduled for Saturday, January 12, 2019 2:00 PM at The Church of the Living God P.G.T., Athens with Eldress Mary Henderson offficiant and Elder Darryl Dunnington eulogist. Interment will be held in North Athens Cemetery under the directions of Garrett & Tucker Funeral Directors.

Bettye Dunnington was born April 19, 1937 in Athens, Texas to Liston Henderson and Lizzie (Massey) Henderson who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband Omega Dunnington, brother and granddaughter. Bettye transitioned January 9, 2019 in her home.

Bettye Dunnington was a graduate of Fisher High School. She received her Bachelors Degree from Prairie View A&M College. She earned a Masters degree at Texas Eastern University (now UT Tyler). She also earned a certification in Special Education.

Bettye taught 44 years in the Athens Independent School District.

As a member of the General Assembly Church of the Living God, P.G.T., she served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and many steering committees. In the community she was involved in the NAACP, Athens Beautification Program, and voter registration.

Survivors include children: Vicki Williams, Dr. Diana Vaughn and Darryl Dunnington. Brother Thomas Henderson; sisters Grace Isaac, Johnnie Byrd and Barbara Hudlin. Nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Visitation and wake services Friday at the church 6:00-8:00 PM.
