Johnnie Darrel Burris, 83, of Tyler passed away peacefully on January 5, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Johnnie was born February 22, 1935 in Stanley County, North Carolina to the late Walter and Mary Burris. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953 and served 6 years before returning home to family.

Johnnie loved race cars, gardening, and westerns. After retiring from driving trucks, he could always be seen working in the yard, tinkering in his tool shed or taking care of the many different animals he raised throughout the years. Johnnie was a simple man. He loved his family more than anything. He was a very proud father and PawPaw, always telling his children and grandchildren just how proud he was of them.

Johnnie is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marvin Burris; grandsons Billy Terry, Jake Garner, Rickey Terry Jr. and Johnny Wayne Burris; his first wife of 11 years, Alma Ruth (Terry) Burris and his second wife of 46 years, Violet Marie Burris.

He will be greatly missed by his children Gary Terry, Rickey Terry and wife Bobbie Gail, Loretta Walsh and husband Donny, Rene Burris and wife Tina, Gwen Abna and husband Joey, Rube Burris, Curtis Colby and wife Glenda, Tony Burris, Anna Fleming and husband Rex; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Malcolm Burris; one sister, Kay Shepherd and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express deepest gratitude to The Hospice of East Texas for their kindness and support during this time. We are humbled by the care and compassion shown by everyone involved.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019 in the Grace Building of Flint Baptist Church with Bro. Park Robertson officiating. The family requests no flowers be sent. If desired, memorials may be made in his honor to The Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd, Tyler, TX 75701 and the SPCA of East Texas 4517 Old Bullard Rd, Tyler, TX 75703.
