Sallie Jane Flanagan Green of Henderson passed from this life in Tyler on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at the age of 67 years, 6 months, and 26 days. She was born in Henderson to Horace Brady Jr. and Billie Jo Propes Flanagan on July 24, 1946. Sallie was married to Doyle Green in Henderson on Aug. 9, 1974.
Sallie loved life and had a positive effect on the lives of everyone around her. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1964 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. After college she worked at SuddenLink Communications for 44 years. Through her work, she developed close relationships with her colleagues, considering them as family.
Sallie fought through difficult health issues with faith in God and faith in the medical professionals who cared for her. She first survived breast cancer in 2003. She was then diagnosed with angiosarcoma in January of 2013, a cancer accounting for only 0.01 percent of adult malignancies. Sallie and her family wanted to extend a special thanks to her oncologist, Dr. Michael Ashigbi of Tyler who fought alongside her for 11 years; Dr. Vinod Ravi of MD Anderson; and the entire ETMC staff.
Because of their experiences, Doyle and Sallie fervently dedicated eight years to raising money for the American Cancer Society through a benefit concert featuring southern gospel music. Their dedication to this effort truly made a positive impact on raising cancer awareness in the Henderson community.
Sallie was a devoted member of Good Hope Freewill Baptist Church her entire life. She cooked breakfast for the church every Sunday, seeing cooking as a way to serve others. Sallie also started the Journey of Hope Cancer Support Group at her church. Her church family was her extended family and provided support to Sallie throughout her life. Sallie's faith enabled her to take an active role in being a Christian influence on the lives of others. She had a deep love for children and devoted time to encouraging children to direct their lives toward Christ.
Sallie also enjoyed working in her yard. She took great pleasure in being outside in God's creation and enjoying His blessings.
Sallie loved being with her family. She was especially close to her sisters, Shirley and Alice Ann. The three of them had a special connection that made them not only sisters but also friends. Most of all, Sallie was a devoted mother to her daughter, Stacey. They were mother and daughter but, more importantly, were each other's best friend. The love between Sallie and Stacey was a true example of Christ's love for His children.
Sallie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyle Green, on Feb. 23, 2009; her nephew, Ken Green; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Homer and Lucille Green.
Sallie is survived by her daughter, Stacey Gordon and husband Brent, of Henderson; her stepdaughter, Gretchen Galindo and husband Joe, of Denham Springs, La.; her sister, Shirley Green and husband Belton, of Henderson; her sister, Alice Ann Green and husband Alvin, of Henderson; her soon-to-be-born grandson, Sage Gordon, of Henderson; her granddaughter, Hallie Gordon, of Shawnee, Okla.; her stepgrandson, Jeremy Broussard, of Denham Springs, La.; her stepgranddaughter, Chelsea Kempton, of Clovis, N.M.; her stepgreat-grandson, Travis Kempton, of Clovis, N.M.; her soon-to-be-born stepgreat-granddaughter, Jada Kempton, of Clovis, N.M.
