Funeral services for Dr. Joyce A. Johnson, 82, of Tyler are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at True Vine Baptist Church with the Rev. Christopher Nauls officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Community Funeral Home of Tyler.
Dr. Johnson died Aug. 13, 2013, at Mother Frances Hospital.
She was born July 31, 1931, in Frankston and was a lifelong resident of Smith County. She was a graduate of Emmett J. Scott High School, received her BA from Texas College, earned a Ph.D. from East Texas State University and attended Ashford University. She taught school in Chapel Hill, Martins Mill and Tyler school districts. She was a notary public. She was a member of True Vine Baptist Church and active in various church activities.
She was a member of TAME-Math and Science Engineers, Heroines of Jericho Lodge, La Rosetta Civic and Cultural Club. She was a Campfire and Girl Scout leader, and a member of the American Association of University Women and Literacy Council of Tyler.
She was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, receiving the Zeta of the Year award, the Civic award from Civitan. She was an outstanding service to our community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter; one sister; and one brother.
Survivors include her husband, Herman Lee Johnson; daughters, Ramona (Joe) Tillman, Arlington, Herquita (Theo) Green, Jacksonville, Pamela (Howard) Quinsey and Sonya (Ronald) Washington, all of Tyler; brother, James (Madeline) Robinson, Dallas; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Zeta Phi Beta ceremony at 6 p.m.
