James Hambrick Reynolds, 86, was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Dallas to Smith Perry Reynolds Sr. and Ruth Hambrick Reynolds. He went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 22, 2013.
Jim was raised in Tyler and educated in the Tyler Independent School System and graduated from Tyler High School in 1943. After one year at Kemper Military School, he was drafted into the United States Navy in 1945. He was stationed at Ward Island Naval Station in Corpus Christi as an aviation radar instructor until 1946.
Jim entered The University of Texas at Austin and received his Business Administration Degree in 1950 and his Engineering Degree in 1952. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and remained a devoted University of Texas Alum his entire life.
Jim Reynolds began his lifelong business career in highway construction contracting as a partner with Reynolds and Williams Contracting in Little Rock, Ark. He was active in numerous business and community organizations until his move back to Tyler in 1988. At that time, he became a partner of Reynolds and Kay Contractors and served in that capacity until his death.
While in Tyler, Jim served on the boards of East Texas Medical Center, The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler and The University of Texas at Tyler Foundation. He was a longtime board director of Peoples National Bank and its successor banks and past board director of Willow Brook Country Club. As an avid fan of The University of Texas athletic and education programs, he was a member of the Longhorn Foundation and a Life Member of the Texas Ex-Students Association.
A man of quiet and personal faith, Jim was a longtime, faithful member of First Baptist Church. He carried a well-worn Bible and notebook of his favorite Scriptures in his car at all times. He was a loving and devoted uncle and great-uncle, making time for his family every week. Jim was a kind, generous and loyal friend to so many. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
Jim Reynolds was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Smith Reynolds Jr.
He is survived by niece, Jean Reynolds Burroughs; nephew, Smith Reynolds III and wife Katherine; grand-niece, Lindsay Burroughs Woldert and husband Thomas; grand-nephews, Drew Burroughs and Smith Reynolds IV; and great-grand-nephews, Thomas Woldert III and Reynolds Woldert.
After private family graveside services, a memorial service was held on Monday, June 24, 2013, at First Baptist Church, with Pastor Pike Wisner officiating.
Pallbearers were Harold Beaird, Joe Bliss, Harry Caserta, John Deibel, Harold Davis, Kevin Deshazo, Elmer Ellis, McHenry Giffin Jr., J.E. Graddy, George Hall, Hunter Kay, Francis Kay, Melvin Lovelady, Rod Mabry, James McCain and Thomas B. Ramey.
Memorials may be sent in lieu of flowers to First Baptist Church, 301 W. Ferguson St., Tyler, 75702.
