Services for Vernon L. Sexton Sr. are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Hilliard Funeral Home, Van, with the Rev. David "Took" Martin and the Rev. Sam Calk officiating. A service will also be held in New Orleans, La., with interment to follow in Westlawn Mausoleum.

Mr. Sexton passed away at the age of 82 on Feb. 18, 2011, in Tyler.
Vernon Lafayette Sexton Sr. was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Van Zandt County to the late James Fred Sexton and Nettie Alice Loper Sexton. He was born and raised in Ben Wheeler, and then returned to the area in 1998 after living in New Orleans for 50 years. He worked for Halliburton Service as a tool pusher and mud engineer. He also served in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of Lone Oak Assembly of God and belonged to the Van High School Class of 1947.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Sexton.
Survivors include his wife, Betty F. Sexton of Ben Wheeler; five children, Avery "Tuggie" Burke and wife Rebecca of New Orleans, La., Ruby Guthrie and husband Rodney of Van, Carolyn Gandy and husband Dennis of Ben Wheeler, Vernon "Bubba" Sexton Jr. and wife Judy of Ben Wheeler, and Richard "Rick" Sexton and wife Wendy of Ben Wheeler; sister, Lynda "Suzie" Lampkin of Lindale; two brothers, Harold Sexton and wife Wanda of Ben Wheeler and Noel Sexton and wife Betty of Ben Wheeler; 14 grandchildren, Julian, Belinda, Penny, Regina, Robin, Neil, Nick, Patty, Lita, Trey, Joshua, Gary, Sarah and Harley; and more than 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Hilliard Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
