A memorial service for Aileen Franklin Layton, 82, of Tyler will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Stewart Family Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Chris Pulliam officiating.

A private burial will take place at Mason Cemetery in Arp under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Layton passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at Azalea Trails Assisted Living and Memory Care under the care of Heart to Heart Hospice.

Aileen was born Jan. 14, 1928, in Brookston to Elbert and Lera Park Mullens.

She was a longtime member of Glenwood Methodist Church, Marvin United Methodist Church and most recently First Christian Church.

Aileen grew up in Campbell and was valedictorian of her graduating class at Campbell High School in 1944. She was a graduate of Dallas Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. Aileen married Olen J. Franklin in 1949. She was employed with the Tyler Independent School District from 1965 to 1988 as a school nurse and was eventually promoted to the coordinator of school nurses. Aileen held an office with the Texas Association of School Nurses and was honored by the Texas State Legislature in 1988 as a pioneer in school nursing. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Aileen later married G.W. Layton in 1993.

She was an active volunteer for The Salvation Army and the Holt House where she served on the board. She loved to travel with her family and friends. Her passion was nursing and caring for others. She never met a stranger and had a knack for always giving the perfect gift.

Aileen was preceded in death by her husband, Olen J. Franklin; husband, G.W. Layton; granddaughters, Betsy Rogers and Mary Elena Franklin; and grandson, Franklin Holt Rogers.

She is survived by her loving family including her sons, Jay Olen Franklin and wife Ana of Dallas and Neal J. Franklin and wife Valli of Tyler; daughter Amy Franklin Moss and husband Jeff of Colleyville; sisters, Wilma Jordan of Dallas and Becky Hightower of Winnsboro; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Moss, Sterling Moss, Adam Franklin, Cody Franklin, Bailey Franklin, Preston Moss and Ryan Moss.

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Layton and Mike Layton.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, Tyler, 75703.

The family would like to thank the loving and caring staff at Azalea Trails Assisted Living and Memory Care and Heart to Heart Hospice. Special thanks also to longtime caregiver and friend, Sheila Johnson.
