Services for Alice C. Newberry, 93, Tyler, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Lloyd James Funeral Chapel with Rev. Allison Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Cathedral in the Pines under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Ms. Newberry passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, in Tyler.

She was born on June 22, 1914, in Fort William, Ontario, Canada, to the late George Benjamin and Alice Maud Durrant Schnurr. Her family moved to Houston in 1927 and she received her degree in elementary education from Rice Institute in 1936. As a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, she taught in the nursery department for 25 years, and 15 years in the preschool program. Moving to Tyler in 1976, she became an active member of Marvin United Methodist Church and the Century Sunday School Class. She was active for years in the Toler Decorative Painting Club, winning many ribbons at the East Texas Fair, and touched numerous lives through her painting and interest in gardening and flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Claude S. Newberry in 1996, and a sister, Isabell Mobley.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Kay Newberry of Tyler; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Paul Hulgan of San Antonio; sister, Ida Mary McFall of Houston; grandchildren, Andy Newberry and wife Kara, their children, Tayler, Claire and Garrett of Tyler, Brad Newberry and wife Kate, their children, Preston and Lilly Katherine of Tyler, Julie Perez and husband Felipe, their children, Samantha and Nathan of El Paso, and Jeff Hulgan of San Antonio.
Pallbearers are Andy Newberry, Brad Newberry, Jeff Hulgan, Felipe Perez, Paul Hulgan and George Newberry. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Century Sunday School Class.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Century Class at Marvin United Methodist Church, 300 West Erwin St, Tyler, 75702; or Christian Homes and Family Services, 13359 Highway 155 South, Tyler, 75703.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
