Memorial services for Ruben Leslie Ray Jr., 65, Van, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Directors, Tyler.
Mr. Ray died May 25, 2013, at 10:47 p.m. at ETMC ICU from stage-4 colon cancer after fighting it for eight months.
He was born Dec. 25, 1947, in Pineville, La., outside of Alexandria, La. He moved to Gladewater in 1954. At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Truman. He also served in the first division of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to 1968. He was a 20-year veteran, having served in Vietnam.
Following the war he returned to Tyler and received his Bachelor of Science at The University of Texas at Tyler in 1979 and a Master of Science in 1981.
He taught electronics/computer technology at Robert E. Lee High School for 30 years, where he received many VICA awards. He was a Smith County deputy in the '70s and '80s in the mounted and car patrol.
He was preceded in death by his nephew, Patrick Ray.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer; sons, Jon Ray and wife Samantha, of Gilbert, Ariz., Jason Ray and wife Jennifer, of Owasso, Okla.; daughter, Stacy Ray, of Whitehouse; mother, Eula Ray; father, Reuben Ray Sr. and wife Nola Ray; siblings, Victoria Waller, David Ray and Victor Ray; grandchildren, Breanna, Bridgette and Berkeley Ray, of Owasso, Okla., Tristan, and Amy Ray, of Gilbert, Ariz.; six nieces; and two nephews.
Knowledge and technology were his passion. Ruben was a mentor to many and took anyone under his wing.
