Charles (Chuck) Richard Helm

Died April 10, 2017

Born in Lancaster PA, the second of 4 sons to Dr. John D. Helm Jr and Grace Higgins Helm. He passed away during surgery from complications of a heart attack in Tyler, TX where he has lived for the past 37 years. Chuck was raised in Lancaster, PA, graduated from Manheim Township in 1966. He excelled in academics, always taking the honors courses and was an accomplished athlete particularly in swimming having competed on the state level throughout his childhood as well as in all fours years of high school. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1970 with a major in psychology. Over his career he was a dairyman, independent trucker, and carpenter and for the past 28 years a nurse. He worked most of the time in emergency medicine and completed his career in the East Texas Medical Center on S. Broadway in Tyler where he was valued by colleagues and patients alike for his calmness in a crisis and kindness to all. He was an avid home-improvement carpenter and was most recently working on installing a sophisticated underground home heating/cooling system. His easy demeanor and good humor were his hallmark traits.

He is survived by his loving partner Laura Kallies and his daughter Amanda Helm (Lindale, TX), as well as by his brothers and their wives and children: John D. Helm, III and Nancy Helm and their two sons Dan and Bill (Frederick, MD); Jim and Karen Helm (Raleigh, NC) and Peter and Joanna; and David Helm and Janet Hirsch (Natick, MA) and Alex and Daniel. He was loved by all and will be missed.

Memorial celebrations of his life will be announced at a later date.
