Funeral service for Mrs. Alva Jean Stewart, 87, Tyler will be 11am, Saturday at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. M.K. Mast, eulogist. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park under the direction of John R. Harmon Undertaking Co. Mrs. Stewart transitioned November 30, 2017 in Tyler.

Alva Jean was born May 12, 1930 in Tatum (Rusk County), Texas to the parents of the late Abe and Kate Smith, and had resided in Tyler since 1949.

She was a graduate of Texas College with a Bachelor Degree in Education. She was employed by Mr. Ross Walker and Family for many years and remained close to them until her death. She was also a substitute teacher for Tyler I.S.D.

Alva was a member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Hospitality Society, served as chair person for the monthly birthdays, a member of the Missionary Society and was deeply involved in the weekly lessons assigned to them. She was an active member in the church and often spent time visiting her step-son, Michael Stewart's church whenever possible.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, sang in the senior choir, secretary for the senior choir, received Distinguished President Award from the Civitan International Club and was active in other organizations as well.

Survivors include: sister, Veris Williams, Dallas, TX; step-children, Edna Thompson, Linda Brown, Jo Ann Bowie, Jackie Mackey, Odis Stewart, Jr., and Rev. Michael Stewart, Jr.; several grandchildren, great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
