Richard Curtis Dunn was called from labor to reward after an extended illness in Shawnee, Kan., on July 16, 2013. Richard was the second child born to the union of the late Curtis and Cora Dunn in Temple on May 31, 1951.
Richard was baptized at Miles Chapel CME Church in Tyler at a young age. After graduation from Emmett J. Scott High School in the Class of 1969, he attended Tyler Junior College and East Texas State University. In 1973 he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after serving a tour in Germany.
Richard married his college sweetheart, D'Juana Walton, on June 16, 1973, and to this union one son, Roderick Chadwell Dunn, was born. He was later blessed with another son, Richard Cordell Dunn.
Richard relocated to Kansas City, Mo., where he was blessed to be employed with various vocational opportunities until his health began to fail. He united with the St. James United Methodist Church and served dutifully as a member of the Adult Usher Board and a participant in the Lifestyles Sunday School Class. He was also honored as the Adult Usher of the Year in 2012.
Richard is now resting from his labor in the presence of his parents and other family members who preceded him in death.
Richard leaves to cherish his memories, his two sons, Roderick (Heather) Dunn, of Tyler, and Cordell (Schou) Dunn, of Kansas City, Kan.; his sister, Jackie (Ronald) Woods, of Overland Park, Kan.; his two brothers, Robert Dunn, of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Ronald Dunn, of Tyler; three grandchildren; one niece; two nephews; special friend, Willie Jewell Jarrett of Overland Park, Kan.; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Richard's wish was to be cremated. His remains will be carried to Huntington Beach, Calif., by his brother, Robert Dunn, and scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 5540 Wayne Ave., Kansas City, Mo., 64110.
Cremation arrangements were with Reflections Memorial Services LLC, 816-561-0101.
