Services for Mackie Gene Adams, 74, of Tyler, will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Tim Burns and Pastor Jaime Lengua officiating. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Moorewood Cemetery in Leedey, Okla., with Pastor Richard Hughes officiating.
Mr. Adams passed away on June 28, 2013, in Tyler. He was born March 4, 1939, in Roscoe to Alvis Watson and Theda Dale Rasco Adams.
Mackie married the love of his life, Mary Margaret Britton, in 1963. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS O'Brien (named after the first Revolutionary War Hero, Private O'Brien). Serving as a missionary, Mackie worked with various churches and served in Brazil from 1966 to 1978. He would travel to several churches on a monthly basis.
Following his missionary service, Mackie graduated from Harding University with a degree in art and later received his Masters of Religious Education from BMA Theological Seminary in Jacksonville. He taught mission classes after attending seminary.
Mackie pastored Crescent Heights Baptist Church in Malakoff and Center of Life Spanish Mission in Tyler, as well as serving as chaplain for ETMC and U.T. Health Center. His love of art, painting and carving led him to teach art classes at Central Baptist School in Athens.
Mackie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 49 years, Mary Adams, of Tyler; children, Paul Adams, of Tyler, and Marcy Lorenson and husband Kirk, of Trinity; sister, Sue Simon and husband John, of Richardson; and by grandchildren, Matthew and Jacob Adams, Rachel and Moses Lengua. He is also survived by a niece, a nephew and many other relatives.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. today, June 30, 2013, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
