Obituary

Services for John R. "Pappy" Mims, 64, of Palestine, will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Elkhart with Bro. Mike Daniels officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in Myrtle Springs Cemetery under direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
John R. "Pappy" Mims went home to be with the Lord on July 13, 2014.
He was born Aug. 10, 1949, in Houston County to the late Melvin Mims and Betty Watts. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War. John retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone in Tyler in 2002 where he was admired by his employees as an outstanding supervisor who truly cared about them.
After his retirement he dedicated his life to being "Pappy" not only to his grandchildren, but to all of the children in the Elkhart ISD. He served as a volunteer and substitute teacher in the school district. Mr. Mims was happiest when he could bring a smile to a child's face. "Pappy" was also dedicated to the sports programs and thoroughly enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren and the teams every chance he could get. Mr. Mims was a Southern Baptist. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Mims and a sister, Judy Mims.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Bill and Betty Watts; his wife of 42 years, Sandra Mims; sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Michelle Mims, of Elkhart, and Jeff and Jennifer Mims, of Waxahachie; brothers, Charles Mims, of Houston, and Richard Mims, of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister, Mary Edwards, of Houston; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
Pallbearers are Kevin Bush, Lane Stovall, Dr. Ryan Daniels, Ron Mays, Mike Sandifer and Greg Herring. Honorary pallbearers are Don Anders and Keith Daniels.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John R. "Pappy" Mims Scholarship Fund at Elkhart State Bank, Elkhart, TX.
