Services for James Oliver Upchurch, 90, of Tyler, will be on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Logan officiating.
Mr. Upchurch passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at his residence in Tyler.
He was born June 5, 1924, in Corsicana to Claude Elmer and Martha Graves Thomas Upchurch.
Mr. Upchurch grew up in Tyler. He earned his chemical engineering degree from The University of Texas in three years and immediately joined the Navy. During World War II he served as a radar instructor. After serving his country, he went back to school for his master's degree and went to work for Humble Oil Co. in New Orleans. He married his first wife, Nancy Emma Brown, in 1950, living in Houston and Dallas, and later moving to Amarillo to serve as vice-president of engineering for Mesa Petroleum. He retired in 1984 and moved to Kerrville where he met and married his second wife, Patricia Crossley Deen.
Mr. Upchurch was a selfless father, always doing for other people. He was an excellent carpenter who loved to help other people and could build or repair anything. Mr. Upchurch loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and loved having his many friends and family visit his cabin and ranch.
Mr. Upchurch was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 42 years, Nancy Emma Brown Upchurch; and brother, Claude Elmer Upchurch.
He is survived by his loving family including his wife of 20 years, Patricia Crossley Upchurch, of Tyler; son, James Alan Upchurch and wife Becky, of San Antonio; daughter, Nancy Ann Calloway and husband Terry, of Albuquerque, N.M.; stepdaughter, Amy Deen Westbrook and husband Bert, of Lawrence, Kan.; stepson, Patrick Deen and wife Jennifer, of Tyler; grandchildren, Katie Calloway Sueda, Carrie Calloway, Susan Upchurch Minicone, Emily Upchurch, Patrick Deen, Annabelle Deen, Thomas Westbrook, Sophie Westbrook and Peter Westbrook; sister, Josephine Upchurch Campbell and husband Donovan, of Dallas; and sister-in-law, Virginia Higgins Upchurch, of Houston.
