Gerald Taylor "Jerry" Ramsey


Services for Gerald "Jerry" Taylor Ramsey, age 91, are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler with the Rev. Darryle Dunks officiating.
Burial will be in Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler under direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Ramsey died on July 26, 2014, in Spring.
Gerald was born on Oct. 29, 1922, in Lufkin and moved to Tyler in 1923. He graduated from Tyler High School in 1940. Gerald was named "Tylerite of the Week" as a courier for the Tyler Morning Telegraph during high school as he earned money to attend college. His high school annual said "he had the looks and the smarts." He attended Texas A&M University for three years and enlisted in the military service in 1943, serving 44 months in the field artillery during World War II. Gerald married Modine Griffith on Jan. 14, 1945. He was discharged in 1946 as a first lieutenant and later graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1947.
He was employed at Lone Star Steel in Gilmer for 15 months, and at Amoco Oil Co. in Texas City for 34 years, retiring in 1982 as a design engineering supervisor.
Mr. Ramsey was an ordained deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Texas City for many years and more recently a member and Sunday school teacher at Green Acres Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Gloryland Singers where he served as president for 2 1/2 years. Gerald also led a group of volunteers to assemble church bulletins and inserts. He was loving, generous and loved to make people smile.
Mr. Ramsey was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil H. and Nancy Ramsey; his brother, Benjamin Ramsey; his sister, Ruth King; his son, Gary D. Ramsey; and his beloved wife of 68 years, Modine Griffith Ramsey.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Kay Hall and husband Michael M. Hall, of The Woodlands; his granddaughter, Leslie Donovan and Chris Donovan, of Clear Lake City; his granddaughter, Rachel Macy and husband Mike Macy, of Magnolia; and his great-grandsons, Andrew Donovan, Michael Donovan, Patrick Donovan and Isaac Macy.
Pallbearers will be Michael Hall, Mike Macy, Chris Donovan, Andrew Donovan, Michael Donovan, and Patrick Donovan.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
