Barre Brooks Monigold

Obituary

Barre Brooks Monigold was born in Harrison County on March 25, 1925, and passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Geniece "Gene" Key Monigold; parents, John Charles Monigold Jr. and Mary Lou (Brooks) Monigold; brother, Duane Monigold; and nephew, Barre Kallan Monigold.
Barre graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and afterwards enlisted in the Army. He was stationed with the occupation forces in Japan where he was a communications specialist. Upon returning home from the military he headed straight for the bright lights of New York, but was soon back in East Texas where he became the program director at one of the first television stations in the area, KTVE Channel 32 in Longview. It was during that time he was introduced to a striking young advertising executive from Dallas, Gene Key, who became the love of his life (his "mi amor") and his wife of 53 years.
Barre and Gene moved to Houston where he began work with Premier Oil, going on to become a VP of advertising with Gordon's Jewelers.
Barre was an avid tennis player and upon returning to Tyler after 20 years in Houston, became a regular with the Tyler Civic Theatre. He was a loving husband, son, brother, and uncle, a true friend and an iconoclast in every sense of the word. We will truly miss his wit, his turn of a phrase and, most of all, the joy that he brought to all of our lives.
He is survived by nephews, Ken (Medora) Monigold, of Dallas and New Orleans, La., Chris (Robin) Monigold, of Garland, Phillip Monigold, of McKinney; great-nieces and great-nephew, Mary, Allison and Matthew Monigold; and dear friends and caregivers, Mel and Lynda Smith and Justin Turner.
Memorials may be sent to the East Texas Food Bank, The Salvation Army or The Hospice of East Texas Foundation.
