William Merrell Greenwell Jr. passed away May 6, 2014, at Mother Frances Hospital. He was born on Jan. 16, 1930, in Monroe, La., to William Merrell Greenwell Sr. and Ruth Jemison Greenwell. He attended Southern Methodist University and graduated from the University of Houston. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force
as a B-29 pilot during the Korean War
and achieved the rank of first lieutenant. After the military, Mr. Greenwell enjoyed a long career in the petroleum industry including positions with Hunt Oil Co. and Delta Drilling Co. in Tyler. He was a member of Christ Church, Episcopal.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura; his sister, Betty Greenwell Jones; and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Greenwell; children, Merrell and Natalie Greenwell III, David Hillman Greenwell, Phillip and Angela Greenwell, Karen and Michael Williams and Hawkins and Theresa Dunlap. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jacob Greenwell, Claire Greenwell, Sarah Greenwell, Douglas Greenwell, Laura Greenwell, Mary Williams, Aaron Williams, James Dunlap, Jasmine Dunlap and Jordan Dunlap; his niece, Nancy Jones King; and nephews, Richard Lawson and Roland Lawson.
Services are Friday, May 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. with visitation following at Christ Church, Episcopal, under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
