Owen Reed Coon

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in mathematics, Owen's 30-plus-year distinguished career in software engineering br-ought him the greatest joy and satisfaction. Although raised in Tyler, once Owen moved to Austin to attend the University, he fell in love with the area and could never separate himself emotionally from the city and its beauty, particularly the trees. Because of that, Austin remained his home base for the rest of his life.

Following positions at NASA Mission Control and as the director of computer services for Texas Secretary of State Mark White, Owen embarked upon his career as an independent embedded software engineer working throughout the United States.

As a private pilot, Owen was particularly delighted and suited to work on the software for the 727, 737, 747-400, 757, 767 tanker, 787 Dreamliner, C130 Cargo, B-52 bomber, and F-20. In addition, he contributed to our nation's defense by developing advanced threat infrared counter measures, lookdown-shootdown radar, tactical jammer laser detection software, a front line battle jamming unit, ADCAP Mark 48 torpedo launch advancements, and several other classified projects.

Owen was an independent thinker, voracious reader, lover of history, follower of politics and, above all, proud father of two beautiful girls. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Stephanie Caldwell; daughters, Elizabeth and Laura; mother, Letha Coon; sister, Sharonne Barton and her husband Gilbert; mother-in-law, Beth Caldwell; brothers-in-law, Brent and Mark Caldwell; and six nieces and nephews.

Private services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Austin Humane Society, 124 West Anderson Lane, 78752, would be appreciated. We will miss and love you forever Baba.
