Melvin J. Moore passed away peacefully at his home in Mineola on March 2, 2013, at the age of 89.
He was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Hot Springs, Ark., to Robert and Minerva Moore. Melvin served in the United States Air Force
during World War II
as a tail gunner, then spent the rest of his military career as an Air Force pilot. Also a veteran of the Korean War
, Melvin served his country for 20 years before retiring with his family to Rusk in 1965. Melvin never lost his love of flying, continuing to build and fly model airplanes after his retirement. Fishing and hunting continued to be a favorite hobby during retirement.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Joella Moore; his two daughters, Sue and husband Rudy Penn, of Abilene, and Brenda and husband David Slaton, of Rusk; four grandchildren; Andrew Penn, Amy Penn, Brent Slaton and Brian Slaton; four great-grandchildren and special friend, Lorene Linton.
The family will hold a graveside service at 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013, at Salem Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Rudy Penn, David Slaton, Andy Penn, Brent Slaton, Brian Slaton and Steve Herbert Jr.
