
Funeral services for Dr. Leon Whitfield, 79, of Flint, Mich., formerly of Tyler, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating.
Burial will be in Kilgore Memorial Gardens under direction of Brooks-Sterling & Garrett Funeral Directors, Tyler.
Dr. Whitfield died Feb. 26, 2013, in Flint, Mich.
He was born Sept. 15, 1933, in Tyler to the late Bishop Whitfield and Gertrude Whitfield. He was a graduate of Emmett J. Scott High School, the
University of Michigan and the
University of Georgia. He received his Ph.D from the
University of Illinois at Chicago. He was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Michigan and Corinth Baptist Church, Tyler. He was an independent consultant.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Survivors include his daughter, Judy Thompson Whitfield-Montgomery (Robert), of Nacogdoches; brother, Wendell Whitfield, of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Public viewing will begin at noon on Friday at the funeral home with visitation from 6 to 7 p.m.
