Effie Aileen Marler

Services for Effie Aileen Marler (née Campbell) will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Bishop Joseph E. Strickland of the Catholic Diocese of Tyler. Burial will follow in Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler, under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Effie passed away Feb. 22, 2013, at The Hospice of East Texas Home Place in Tyler.
Effie was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Gallup, N.M., to Roscoe C. and Ethel Maud Wilson (née Turnbull and formerly Campbell). She was married for 64 years to William "Bill" C. Marler Jr., who passed away in 2006.
Effie retired from the Allen M. Campbell Co., General Contractors of Tyler in the Jacksonville, N.C., office where she was office manager and Bill was vice president of operations for that region. During World War II, Effie served as a Technician Third Grade (generally addressed as Staff Sergeant) in the 6715th WAC Communications Company in the European Theater. She was awarded several medals and honors, including the Bronze Star, for her service. Prior to enlistment, she married Bill, who served in the Army as a master sergeant in the Pacific Theater. After the war, the couple settled in Ruidoso, N.M., where they managed a bowling alley before moving to Alamogordo, N.M., where they managed a motel. The couple later joined the Campbell Co., for which they worked in New Mexico, California, Utah, South Dakota, Florida and finally Jacksonville, N.C., where they retired. In 2006, Bill and Effie moved to Tyler to be near family.
Effie was an avid golfer who shot several holes-in-one and won several championships in her career. She also loved bowling, playing bridge and mah jong, life and being around people in general.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; their infant son, William C. Marler III; several siblings; and her father and mother. She is survived by her loving family: son, Michael Marler and his wife Jan of Tyler and their daughter Kara and her husband Jeremy Kennedy; son, Gary Marler and his wife Vicki of Houston and their children Kiri (née Repp) and her husband Chris Tomasco and their son Carson, Darcie Repp, and Nolan and Rilee Marler; and her brother, Ernest Campbell of Eugene, Ore.
Visitation is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler.
The family would like to express our deepest appreciation for the loving care Effie received from the staff at The Hamptons at Pine Forest and Hamptons Plus Care over the past several years and the comfort she was given in her final days from the staff at The Hospice of East Texas HomePlace.
