Charles E. Sanders

Charles E. Sanders, of Mesquite, devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, left this world on March 18, 2013. Born Jan. 18, 1925, in Mount Vernon to Arthur and Maude Sanders. Charles served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He began his long career with the Ford Motor Co. in 1946 in Richmond, Calif., moving to Dallas in 1947. Serving as local president of the United Auto Workers Union for many years, in 1965 he accepted a role as an international representative of the UAW and moved to St. Louis, Mo. Charles had once considered the ministry as his calling, but as he became active in the union he truly felt he had found the avenue the Lord intended him to follow in order to make a difference in other peoples' lives. He retired from both Ford and the UAW in 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Bonnie, and children, Ouida Brown (Tom), Chuck Sanders (Nancy), and Anita LeBeau (Kevin); nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bonita Cowdrey.

Charles and Bonnie enjoyed many years of traveling in their RVs, both before and after retirement. He traveled to all 50 states and loved the natural beauty of our country. They returned to Texas in 1987 and lived in Chandler for 17 years before moving to Mesquite.

Visitation will be held at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home, 205 Broad Street, Chandler, at 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m.
