Dr. Joe David Prejean passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, after a long-fought battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS).
He was born Feb. 9, 1940, in Pampa to J.C. "Buck" and Blanche Prejean. He was a graduate of Tyler High School and Stephen F. Aus-tin State College, where he received his BS. He received is M.A. from East Texas State University and earned his Ph.D in radiation biology from Texas A&M University.
David spent his career at Southern Research Institute where he was a noted scientist and cancer researcher, retiring in 2000 as president and CEO. He was adjunct associate professor public health at UAB, a member of Sigma Xi, The American Association for Cancer Research, New York Academy of Sciences and The American College of Toxicology and was on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society. He loved golf, working in the yard, relaxing at the beach with his grandchildren and traveling with his wife, Candi.
David is survived by his wife Candice Dominick Prejean; two children, K'Anne Cox (Dale), of Columbus, Ohio, and M. David Prejean (Gayle), of Dallas; and his grandchildren, Claire Elizabeth Cox, Caleigh Marie Cox, William Ward Prejean and Catherine Elizabeth Prejean.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Ala., 35209. The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 10, at All Saints Episcopal Church at 3 p.m. Private burial services will be held in Tyler at a later date.
