Obituary

Dorothy Evelyn Gandy, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at The Hospice of East Texas.

She was born in Grand Saline on Aug. 16, 1927, to Henry Grady Shirley and Emma Kirk Shirley. She graduated from Grand Saline High School in 1945 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1950 from North Texas State College (now known as the University of North Texas), in Denton.

She was a schoolteacher and did her student teaching in Eagle Pass, Donna and Corpus Christi. She also taught at Dallas, Grand Saline and Chandler independent school districts, and retired in 1982 from Tyler ISD.

She married Billy Doyle Gandy in Dallas on Dec. 22, 1951. They were married for 29 years until he preceded her in death in 1981. She was a member of Rice Road Church of Christ, and enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading her Bible and spoiling her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Emma Shirley; brothers, Henry Shirley, Vernon Shirley and George Shirley; sister, Frances Bailey; and husband, Billy Doyle Gandy.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Brenda Gandy, of Tyler; son, Terry Gandy, of Lindale; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and David Sharpe, of Tyler; grandchildren, Dianna and husband Clay Parker, of Tyler, Jonathan and wife Julie, of Quitman, Christopher Gandy, of Tyler, and Jacey Glover, of Tyler; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Parker, of Tyler, and Evan Gandy, of Quitman.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, in the chapel of Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home with Mike Thomley and Clark Dugger officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Flat Cemetery near Grand Saline.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
